Family Program

Referrals

Who can be referred?

Children aged 0-9 years who are at risk, or have been abused, and their families.

If you know or suspect that a child has been abused it must be reported to the Department of Community Services Helpline. They will investigate the report  and if appropriate, will forward it to a local office. They can then refer the family to Jannawi as part of ongoing case management.

If you are concerned about a family where the risk of abuse is high it is appropriate to refer directly to the Centre following a report to the Helpline. Families self referring will also be accepted.

Jannawi will notify the relevant DoCS Community Service Centre of families in their area that are attending the Program.

In cases of child sexual assault, staff at Jannawi work with the child and the non-offending parent/s sibling/s.

How to refer

Please telephone Jannawi with the following information:

Referrers details

Family details- names addresses, ages etc

The reason for referral

What your hopes are for our involvement with the family

DoCS involvement

Strengths identified in the family

We will also ask if the family is aware of the referral and whether they are aware of the service we provide

What happens after you refer?

A decision will be made about whther the referral is accepted for assessment and you will be informed as soon as possible.

If accepted we will meet with the referring agency and the family to discuss the following:

  • Reason for referral
  • Child protection concerns
  • Identified problem areas that need to change
  • Family Strengths and resources
  • The Centre’s philosophy and role, and
  • Activities and services we provide to families

This meeting takes place at Jannawi, and the referrer is asked to facilitate the family’s attendance for the first meeting

A decision is made as to whether the family will engage with Jannawi. If so, the parent/s and allocated Family Counsellor will meet to formulate a mutual agreement about ongoing involvement and the changes which need to occur for their children’s safety.

A written agreement will be drawn up between the Centre, the family and when appropriate, the referring agency.
