Our Philosophy is that the best possible outcome for children and families is achieved when:
- All communication with clients and relevant others is open and honest.
- The physical and psychological safety and wellbeing of children is always the primary focus of our intervention;
- Children and families access comprehensive and integrated programs that provide both therapeutic and practical interventions that acknowledge relevant social, economic and political contexts;
- The effects of abuse and trauma are acknowledged in terms of the impact on relationships and how people think, feel and behave and;
- Programs are delivered by a skilled and professional team of staff in a positive, respectful and consistent manner.
Power and control- abuse occurs when this is misused.
Models of Intervention-
Ecological and Multidimensional
Jannawi works on the belief that the protection of children needs to proceed all other program interventions, therefore we see protection of children as our first priority, followed by the empowerment of the parent/s.
We work with children in the context of their family, and community including schools. Jannawi does not work with children in isolation from their families, as children’s needs and behaviours are best understood within a context of their world. We also recognise that the needs and best interest of children may at times be contradictory to the needs of parents. We believe that parents need to accept responsibility for ensuring the ongoing safety of their children and often need support and information to do this.
We believe that children are best cared for in their own family. Placement of children outside the family should only be considered when the risks to the child’s safety and welfare have been thoroughly assessed and all reasonable options for assisting and supporting the parent/s have been fully explored.
Child Development
We believe that the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of children is enhanced through a combination of early intervention and the provision of practical ways of dealing with parenting issues.
We place importance on promoting changes in the child / parent relationship through working with the whole family. The child development work is a key component of our program and is undertaken in conjunction with the therapeutic program. It provides an opportunity to establish relationships with children, assess their needs and strengths and model appropriate behaviour.
